India’s star tennis player Sania Mirza came down heavily on sections of the media, just one day after denying the service tax evasion in response to notices last week issued by the Central Board of Excise and Customs, for choosing to focus on negative news rather than her entry into the semi-finals of the ongoing Qatar Open. Mirza, who is set to play the semi-final against the duo of Abigail Spears and Katarina Srebotnik later on Friday with her partner Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic looked furious with the importance given to the tax issue.

“Standing ovation to our amazing certain sections of media who haven’t bothered to write or report about me being in another semi finals of a tournament in Qatar, but heyyy there are 100 articles about ‘tax evasion’ which most of them don’t even understand properly. As to what’s going on I think is pretty clear negative news sells a lot more than positive news or achievements I guess!!” she added.

She posted a tweet saying the negative news is sold easily. “As to what’s going on ???????????????????????????????? I think is pretty clear negative news sells a lot more than positive news or achievements I guess!!” her tweet read.

The service taxes division of the customs department had issued the notice asking Mirza to appear before authorities on February 16 either in person or through representatives. Sania’s accountant appeared on her behalf. In her report, Mirza said the Rs 1 crore given to her by the Telangana government was a “training incentive”.

This isn’t the first time when Sania is in trouble with media. Last year, during one of her interviews before the launch of her autobiography, a senior journalist asked her when does she plan to settle in life? To this, Sania replied by saying that motherhood is not the only criteria for settling in life and asked the journalist if he had asked the same question to a male athlete. After this statement, the journalist accepted his mistake and apologised.
